Keynote Speaker

Brad Wuetherick, Executive Director – Learning and Teaching, Dalhousie University

Keynote Speech: Putting students at the centre of our work: Using data and evidence to drive change in higher education teaching and learning

Are our campuses effectively creating a dynamic and innovative learning environment for our students? Are the interventions we make at the course, program or institutional level having the impact that we intend to improve learning? What other interventions might we undertake in the future that would improve the learning experiences for our campus communities? This presentation will explore two key themes that are critical for higher education professionals to explore as they consider how to advance teaching and learning – involving students as partners in higher education, and creating environments that enable data and evidence-informed decision-making across our campuses. Using examples from Dalhousie University’s student evaluations of teaching, we will explore how these two overarching themes manifest in our efforts to drive change in teaching and learning across campus.

About Brad Wuetherick: Brad Wuetherick is the Executive Director, Learning and Teaching at Dalhousie University. In addition to overseeing Dalhousie’s Centre for Learning and Teaching, which is responsible for overseeing Dalhousie’s formal process for student evaluations of teaching, Brad serves as a senior leader within the Office of the Provost and VP Academic supporting the advancement of effective practice in teaching and learning across the campus. An active scholar of teaching and learning in higher education, with over 50 publications and more than 250 presentations at conferences or institutions, Brad’s research covers the spectrum of academic analytics, mentorship, experiential learning, e-learning, the state of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) as a field, academic development and threshold concepts across the disciplines. Within that spectrum, his primary area of focus of research over the past 15 years has been on involving undergraduate students as partners in research – explicitly on scaling undergraduate research across the disciplines and the role of mentorship as part of students’ academic and identity development – though over the past handful of years Brad has increasingly been a featured or invited speaker on issues related to academic analytics and the evaluation of teaching in higher education.
