While there is no one-size-fits-all approach to creating a research project progress report, it should address the following key elements:

Results and Impact of the Project So Far

    • If your grant proposal contains some sort of quantifiable goal (for example, “to collect data with a survey from students “), your report should address whether the research project yielded the desired results. If you didn’t meet your initial goals, offer an assessment about what you think went wrong or what led to your miscalculation. A grant report should also speak to a project’s overall impact. Numbers can be particularly helpful in reporting, allowing to see exactly how many people its grant has helped. In some cases, however, it might be difficult or impossible to accurately gauge a research project’s results. We suggest stressing intermediate findings.

    Financial Statement

    • Include a financial statement, which tells how you spent the grant, including all costs associated with the project, in comparison to the original budget in your research grant proposal.

    Lessons Learned

    • A grant report should also include information on the project’s major takeaways so far, including unexpected challenges that you faced.
